A terrible road accident in Saudi Arabia on Monday claimed the lives of at least 42 Indian Umrah pilgrims. The group was on their way to the holy city as part of their Umrah pilgrimage, and the unfortunate incident took place on a major highway.
Preliminary reports indicate that the collision caused a huge fire that became the engulfed bus in no time and left many passengers trapped inside. Although emergency teams went to the site instantly, the fire's intensity rendered rescue operations quite difficult.
The authorities in Saudi Arabia have not yet announced the precise number of deceased persons, but the officials are worried that the death toll might go up as the rescue teams are still on the site. Several injured passengers have been transported to the nearest hospitals for emergency medical attention.
Indian diplomatic representatives in Saudi Arabia are working with the local authorities to collect information, and in the meanwhile, propping up the surviving pilgrims. Identifying the dead and providing the victims' families with the necessary support is also part of the efforts.
Footage from the accident site that is making the rounds on social media reveals a thick cloud of black smoke coming out of the burnt bus while at the same time showing how severe the accident was.
As the investigation continues more details and official confirmations are expected.
